About Dr. Rick McKinney

Dr. Rick McKinney is the President/CEO of TRETMENT Inc, the Founder of the REST Philly Project and the creator of Rational Emotive Spiritual Therapy (REST) a counseling technique which combines cognitive therapies (REBT etc.) with Spiritual Interventions.

Dr. McKinney earned his doctorate from the University of Miami in Miami Florida, School of Education and Counseling Psychology in 1978. His research was a study in personality and giving patterns of philanthropists utilizing discriminate function analysis and was the first recorded scientific study on Philanthropy in America. He has raised over $15 million dollars for a host of educational institutions as well as  community and faith- based organizations.

Armed with an undergraduate degree in Religion and Sociology (Oakwood University) and graduate education in theology (Andrews University) he began his professional career as a church pastor in the State of Kentucky. Within 3 years, he began developing social programs with church congregations, including housing for the elderly. He developed a passion for working with individuals addicted to drugs and alcohol, which led him back to graduate school where he earned a Masters in Adolescent Counseling and a Doctorate in Education. He taught graduate classes in Educational Psychology, Counseling, and Addictive Behavior at three major Universities; conducted hundreds of workshops and seminars; and has given over 2,000 speeches and sermons in 83 cities and 42 states. He has authored numerous published articles, workbooks, and manuals; a book on cocaine use in America, No Exceptions (Not in print); and co-authored a study on cocaine use in the State of Florida as a member of the Governors Cocaine Task Force. He has also successfully authored six federal grants. His latest book, The Clinical Jesus, published in 2003 is a robust case by case analysis of 26 of Jesus’ clients and documents the healing work of Jesus viewed from a modern psychotherapeutic perspective. A definitive book on the REST faith counseling modality I Give You REST is scheduled for publishing in the fall of 2010.

                                                  (I-REST Inc)

Historical Overview

The Institute for Rational Emotive Spiritual Therapy Inc (I-REST Inc) was founded by Dr. Rick and  Sheila McKinney in 2005 and incorporated in the State of Delaware. In 2006 I-REST was granted a 501-c3 faith-based incorporation by the IRS.  I-REST is the faith-based public services arm of TRETMENT Inc founded in the state of Nevada in 1990. TRETMENT Inc, a private non-profit community based organization was established to provide contractual services for mental health counseling, training and education for professional mental health providers. It has provided such services to federal and local government agencies first in Nevada for Public Housing (HUD), courts, criminal justice institutions and agencies and educational institutions (public schools (see TRETMENT Inc tab). TRETMENT Inc expanded its contractual services to government agencies in creating the REST Philly Project (2000) in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania by including the training of Faith-based institutions and providing mental health faith-based counseling, mentoring and related reentry services to inmates, ex-offenders and their families. It also expanded its contracting base by including contracting with the US Department of Labor (see The REST Philly Project tab). Providing expanded services to faith-institutions made it necessary to incorporate a 501(c3) organization.
